New Harvard Center on the Developing Child Video: Building Core Capabilities for Life

by | Feb 15, 2018

Every day we take on the ordinary, sometimes challenging, tasks of work, school, parenting, relationships and managing our busy lives. How do we navigate these tasks successfully? What can send us off course? This short new video by the Harvard Center on the Developing Child explores the development and use of core capabilities—known as executive function and self-regulation skills—from early childhood into adolescence and adulthood.

Children’s ability to regulate their emotions and actions and focus on importance tasks puts them on the path to attaining greater competencies needed to successfully manage themselves in the world. Setting the foundation for achieving these skills begins with supportive and encouraging interactions with parents, caregivers and other important adults in their lives.
