Hands-On Learning at the State Fair

by | Aug 27, 2014

Great hands-on learning opportunities at the Nebraska State Fair offer families a chance to celebrate the end of summer and spend some time together.

Check out the Family Fun Activity Center for activities geared toward kids. There are free games, contests and crafts, including jumbo checkers and a giant Jenga, a groundswide scavenger hunt, a hands-on living history experience from the Stuhr Museum and AG-venture Farm that teaches families about where our food comes from. And don’t forget the birthing pavilion to see chicks and piglets, and the petting zoo.

Boy Scout troops will host rain gutter regatta races this weekend, and Saturday is Science Discovery Day. The Strategic Air & Space Museum will host interactive activities and demonstrations, including a mobile observatory, shuttle slide and a Multi Access Trainer (MAT). They’ll launch a high-altitude balloon from the Family Fun Zone stage at noon and provide a website address to track the balloon.

Rich early childhood experiences like these in which children are allowed to explore, experiment and learn through doing set the foundation for later learning. And don’t let the fun stop after your visit—talk about what you saw and did. What was everyone’s favorite activity? Read books about animals you saw, talk about what farmers do and don’t forget to track the balloon!
